How Often Should You Clean a Chimney in Canada?

For most wood-burning fireplaces, plan a sweep every 50–70 fires or at least annually. In colder provinces or for daily winter use, twice per season is prudent. Pellet stoves may require more frequent cleanings due to ash. Always book an inspection after any chimney fire, earthquake, or major storm event.

Creosote is a tar-like byproduct of incomplete combustion. Stage 1 is flaky and easier to remove; Stage 2 is crunchy and adheres to liners; Stage 3 is hard, glassy, and highly flammable. Proper burning and regular sweeping reduce accumulation and fire risk.
